ublished study of 131 marijuana smokers (24 percent were daily smokers and
6 percent smoked marijuana less than weekly) two law school students, Lloyd Haines and
Warren Green asked the users' subjective views on the dangers of several Overgrow commonly used
drugs. Ratings of one (least harmful) to five (most harmful) were given to each substance.About 80 percent rated marijuana one, or least harmful, in terms of physical damage; none rated marijuana four or five. On the other hand, a majority rated the other drugs very harmful, physically. Two-thirds rated cigarettes (63 percent) and stimulants (68 percent) four or five on the physical damage scale, and over half rated alcohol (55 percent) and LSD (56 percent) either four or five. In terms of psychological harm, only two respondents rated marijuana either four or five, and about go percent rated it one or two. Cigarettes were not seen as a particularly great psychological threat; only 24 percent considered it four or five in this category of harm. However, stimulants (amphetamines), LSD and, to some extent, alcohol, were seen as capable of harming the individual psychologically. Two-thirds for the stimulants and LSD (66 percent for both) and not quite half for alcohol (46 percent) were rated in the two most harmful categories. These data point to two clear facts: marijuana users vigorously deny that the drug is harmful in any significant degree, and smokers are capable of making clear-cut distinctions among various drugs as to danger. Overall, amphetamines (speed) of all the drugs on the Haines and Green list were seen as the most dangerous, with alcohol and LSD contending for second place. Often explanations for a somewhat puzzling activity are unduly complex; subterranean and insidious interpretations are presented where the participant explains it more simply: "I like it." It seems that we find it necessary to search deeper when we cannot identify with the reason supplied. If it does not seem conceivable that anyone would actually "like it," whatever the activity or substance, then a more plausible theory, often invoking a pathology, must be summoned from the deep. To the critically inclined, "I like it" is insufficient, merely a rationalization.
Yet marijuana's severest critic must recognize the fact that users overwhelmingly describe the effects of the drug in positive terms. (See the chapter on "Effects.") The fact that the high is thought of as largely favorable cannot be ignored in understanding the justification that smokers use. "It's fun" and "I like it" are organic fixtures of the rhetoric for marijuana use. Yet, so elastic is the real world that this very trait, often cited by users themselves, is actually wielded by the cannabis critics to condemn the drug. connection between marijuana and crime exists only in the minds of men. Paper, as Stalin
so cynically observed—and, indeed, put into practice—can be made to print anything.
The studies most often cited to prove that marijuana causes crime are those by Munch
("Marihuana and Crime"), Wolff (Marihuana in Latin America), Gardikas ("Hashish and
Crime"), an unpublished manuscript by Victor Vogel, and several works by the Indian
Chopras. We will examine these reports.
Half of Munch's eight-page article on marijuana and crime20] is taken up with
enumeration of crimes committed, supposedly, under the influence of marijuana. ( Or so
the caption indicates. There is no indication of how the police detected marijuana
intoxication. During the entire period when all of the enumerated crimes were committed,
there was no known method for detecting the presence of marijuana in the human body. In
some of the cases, clues were mentioned, but most of them omit references to the drug.)
Sixty-nine cases are included, going back to the 1930S (in one case, back to 1921, before
the existence of marijuana laws). A typical case might be "Smoked marijuana for years;
held up three taxi-cabs," or "Negro, shot and killed while attempting to holdup grocer in
Harlem; plea guilty." Only a glance back at the discussion of the enumerative method of
reasoning illuminates the worth of this procedure.
Another section of Munch's article is an enumeration of "references" which lists works,
most of which assert the connection between marijuana and crime without empirical
documentation. A table presents, supposedly, effects of marijuana on the human mind and
body. Several of these effects have been empirically demonstrated to be false:
hypoglycemia (decrease in blood sugar), a decrease in the rate of respiration, and
mydriasis (marked dilation of the pupils), for instance. Other effects are merely asserted
and are, by all known accounts, highly improbable: "chronic exposure produces brain
lesions," "death by cardiac failure some individuals after l00 to 200 times therapeutic
dose,"21] "hypersensitivity sensation of ants running over skin" (not one of my 200
respondents described this particular sensation), "diarrhea or constipation," etc. One
wonders, after this inventory of effects, why anyone would ever try the drug; if one
believed that these effects ever took place, the fact that millions of people in this country

I've grown 4 crops of Flo. It is very difficult to clone and not very hardy. I lose 40% of the clones, and just lost 2 plants when my hydro system was shut off accidentally. All the other strains survived without any harm, but the Flo dried out beyond recovery. This is not an easy strain to work with. The only reason I keep growing it is because of its fragrance and taste. I love the hashy fragrance and taste. It is truly an exceptional strain in this regard. The seedlings I grew were not very uniform in this regard, which might explain why yours does not have much odor. Was it you that had experience with NLxHaze? I now have two from Sensi that are growing like wildfire in my
flowering closet. They have almost taken over. My question is are these girls going to be worth the trouble they
are causing. If not I am thinking of ripping them out now. It is really running on me. Has to be the Haze.

These did not preflower.They full on began to flower at about 6-7 weeks.When it became apparent that they
would continue, I moved them into the flowering area. After a decent harvest, I revegged all three and after
about 5-6 weeks they began to flower automatically AGAIN. I have bred these plats and their offspring have
just begun to break soil. I'll just go with the flow and play jr.scientist trying to find out if it was enviromental or
genetic. It was great and worth the money but still not the best I ever had... growing conditions could have
been a little better. The buzz was powerful and very up heady, a little disorientating and a good laster. Taste
was unique kind of a lime flavor with a fruity-tooty hint. mellow burn. excellent stuff but I have had stronger in
jamacia. slow-slow-slow grower and quite pricey for the seed bank seeds. I may have gotten better results had
I waited longer and dryed longer. I still have 5 seeds left and 4 clones so I am going to refine my growing
techniuqe. but it will be a long time for 2nd set of results. would I recommend it yes but maybe not on limited
funds or for the impatient grower. I love the taste though and the buzz... awesome!Turbo a is not damaging at all, it would be necessary to produce evidence that all cases
of marijuana use did not result in damage—all individuals at all times—an obvious
impossibility. Whereas to show that it is damaging in any degree, only a few scattered

a question which is, itself, problematic.) Consequently, there is no conceivable evidence

Strategies of Discreditation
Labeling has political implications. By devising a linguistic category with specific
connotations, one is designing armaments for a battle; by having it accepted and used, one
has scored a major victory. For instance, the term "psychedelic" has a clear prodrug bias:
it says that the mind works best when under the influence of this type of drug. (Moreover,
one of the psychedelic drug proselytizers, in search of a term which would describe the
impact of these drugs, rejected "psychodelic" as having negative overtones of psychosis.)
The term "hallucinogen" is equally biased since an hallucination is, in our civilization at
least, unreal, illusory, and therefore undesirable; the same holds for the term
"psychotomimetic," capable of producing a madness-like state. The semantics and
linguistics of the drug issue form an essential component of the ideological skirmishes.
17] As an example of how labeling influences one's posture toward a phenomenon, note
that the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs has jurisdiction over "addicting" drugs,
which supposedly includes marijuana, while the Food and Drug Administration handles
"habit-forming" drugs. Because of this jurisdictional division, the Bureau is forced into the
absurd position of having to classify marijuana as an addicting drug, and to support this
contention, it supplies drug categorizations that follow jurisdictional lines,18] as if they
had some sort of correspondence in the real world. However, the Bureau seems not to take
its own classifications seriously, since whenever the issue is discussed by its members, it
is emphasized that marijuana is not addicting in the classical sense, but it produces a
"psychological dependence."19]
"Drug abuse" is such a linguistic device. It is often used by physicians and by those in
medically related fields. Encountering the use of the term, one has the impression that
something quite measurable is being referred to, something very much like a disease, an
undesirable condition which is in need of remedy. The term, thus, simultaneously serves
two functions: it claims clinical objectivity and it discredits the action that it categorizes.
In fact, there is no such objectivity in the term; its use is baldly political. Drug abuse is the
use of a drug that influe n common patterning of functioning in all of these people, a common
pattern superimposed on their individual uniqueness, we may hypothesize something to explain this
common pattern. This hypothesized something might be a common personality trait, belief system,
physical attribute, or, in terms of our interest a common state of consciousness. Particularly, if we know
that all the observed individuals ingested marijuana just before we began observing them, we will be
tempted to say that the common pattern of functioning we observe is the result of their all being in a
state of marijuana intoxication.
Note, however, that it is the empirically observed common pattern of functioning1] that is the crucial
defining operation of the state of consciousness; the fact that they had all ingested marijuana serves
secondarily to specify something we think to be a cause of the hypothesized state of consciousness.
What, then, are the properties of this hypothesized state of consciousness, marijuana intoxication?
How do we discover these properties?
Clearly the way to answer this is to give marijuana to a number of people and observe what is
common in their experience and behavior. Unfortunately, the observation process is much more complex
and full of pitfalls than we would expect.
Much of our usual experience with the effects of drugs on consciousness misleads us into expecting
fairly simple relationships. If, for example, you give a strong dose of barbiturates or other sedatives to a
person, he almost always goes to sleep. Hence we describe the state of consciousness (or lack of it)
induced by barbiturates as a barbiturate-induced sleep. There is little variability across subjects, and our
observational process is simple.
With a psychoactive drug like marijuana, on the other hand, the variability across subjects is very
high, and the observation process itself may systematically bias what we observe, as will be detailed in
the next section. It may even turn out that different people might experience different states of
consciousness from using marijuana, that is, the observed patterns of experience and behavior fall into
several distinct patterns rather than a single pattern common to all individuals. We generally consider
alcohol intoxication, for example, as a single state, yet on a second thought there are clearly some
individuals who have very different experiences with alcohol from those the majority of us have. A drug
may thus stimulate a reorganization of functioning, but the nature of the new pattern may be determined
by factors other than the nature of the drug per se.
Let us consider in detail the question of why a given individual, taking marijuana (or any other
psychoactive drug, for that matter) at a particular time and place, might experience the particular things
that he does.
VARIABILITY OF DRUG-INDUCED STATES
Our common experience with many drugs inclines us to think along the line that "Drug A has effects
